Hi everyone. I’m not new here at all! I’ve been tagging along with Peter through a few cohorts now. I still have so much to learn and I love listening to people talk about Hawaii so I keep coming back. That’s one of the awesome things here – once you are an Islander Ohana member, you are forever. 😊
Any way after reading some of your profiles I feel like I have a lot in common with you. My husband and I too will be retiring in Hawaii. We have 1.5 years left until we will be Big Island residents forever.
We bought a home in Kona and sold our home here in Colorado. We now rent a modest place here in Colorado, and rent out the Hawaii home. The rent covers the mortgage and the property manager! Woohoo!
Well, we had visited the home on the Big Island a couple of times, but recently the renter told us how hot it was in the home constantly. They had to run the AC 24/7 and it didn’t help much. This really made us think – how can we afford that in retirement and do we want to be so uncomfortable? So we sold it and are in the process of closing on a similar home at elevation. At the 1500 foot elevation we won’t even have AC because we will get the trade winds. The little things you learn along the way!
Well, just wanted to say hello even though I’m old here, not new. Haha

    Aloha Everyone

I’m Judi Weber. My husband and I live in Grand Junction, Colorado. Soooooo tired of it here – but we have a plan so that helps. I have been a member of the Islander Ohana for over a year. Not only did it help me learn about the culture of Hawaii and many other things – it helped us buy a home. Peter has connections with amazing realtors, and that’s why this worked for us. Last July we closed on our house in Kona on the Big Island. We have been planning this move for over 10 years, and it was finally time to make the home purchase. We are renting the house out in Kona to a family, long term. We use a property manager to help us out with that. We were able to buy the Hawaii house by selling our home here in Colorado, and downsizing by renting a small home here. We are able to pay the mortgage on the Big Island with the rental income from that house. We will be retiring in 2 years and then the house in Kona will be our forever home. You guys can do this!

    Hi!

I’m Judi Weber and I’ve been part of this group for my third time now. I just can’t get enough of it, so I keep coming back – haha! My husband and 5 year old and I live in Grand Junction, Colorado and have been here for the last 25 years. We originally came from San Diego.

We went to Kona on the Big Island in June 2021 and bought our home there. The only problem is that we can’t retire yet (2.5 more years) so we have to wait and rent it out for now. To buy our home there, we sold our home here and are renting a modular on the Colorado River. We are definitely “in the sticks” right now, waiting it out.

    Hi Everyone

I’m Judi Weber and I’m back for a second time as a cohort member because I just can’t soak up enough Hawaii out here in the desert of Colorado – haha! My husband and I sold our house here in April since it’s such a “seller’s market” and we knew we would be selling within 3 years anyway. We are retiring on the Big Island in 2024. It’s for sure! After selling our house and watching Peter’s shows we realized houses in Hawaii aren’t going to drop in price soon – so I went on a journey alone to the Big Island. We had been there before but this time I was seeing it with new eyes – like we really are going to live here! Because of Dylan on Peter’s show, I felt like Ohana with him amd the other realtor he set me up with. They took care of everything and helped me out so much. I found a house! We now are homeowners in Kona! But now to wait the 3 years for retirement. So here I am hanging out with you guys. :)

in reply to: Biggest surprises? #15000

I knew that the public schools weren’t many people’s favorite in Hawaii – but I had assumed it was more due to the quality of education vs private schools there. I was surprised to hear that in the public schools haoles would very likely be treated poorly though! Good to know now so we can factor in a different type of schooling for our youngest daughter. She will be 8 years old when we move there, and our other children are grown. My niece is a local on the Big Island and has her kids in a charter school. I would like to learn more about how charter schools work because she said she doesn’t have to pay for it and loves the school.

    Hi Mark and Lisa

My husband and I were at Chili’s having a couple of cold ones years ago when we first decided this was what we both want in life too. I love the phone countdown idea. Gonna set that up tonight! 🤙🏽

    Hi Kelly

It will be fun to be in this group with you. I have a 4 year old so we should have some great discussions. How fun to have your family there!

    Hi Kathryn

I’m in Colorado too! Grand Junction. I’m guessing you are on the eastern slope – just because most people are. Haha. And I’m a school counselor. We won’t be permanently relocating until I retire in 3 years. I hope you get a job there all lined up for next year. 😊

    Hi Jody

Nice to meet you. Sounds like we have a lot in common other than we are currently in two different countries. But someday we will end up in Paradise and a lot closer than we are now.

    Hey Michael

The cool thing about the Friday show is that it is free advice for everyone. Viewers can submit questions and realtors from the different islands tell what it’s like where they live. It’s a fun and informative show. I’d suggest to check it out even if you have a realtor. It’s just informational – not a commitment whatsoever. Like watching a TV show about
Hawaii since we aren’t there yet. 🤙🏽

    Aloha Everyone

I’m Judi and I am so excited to be part of this group. We are moving to the Big Island in 2024 but will be buying a condo or home there in the next couple of months. I have loved Hawaii since I first visited there as a young teen 40 years ago. My brother was stationed on Oahu, so we would go as a family to visit. He married a local girl from Waianae, and eventually my parents allowed me to travel alone and spend entire summers there with them! It was amazing and I felt like I got to grow up there with his wife’s sisters. I can’t count how many times I have been to Hawaii. My husband and I have visited all of the four main islands and both are equally ecstatic to retire on the Big Island. My favorite niece lives on the Big Island with her family so we can’t wait to live closer to them. Just a few more years and the three of us (my husband, 4 year old, and I) will be living our dream! Looking forward to learning all we need to know before the move.
